Around the World
Hannibal in Thailand
This is Simbah, and for 2 hours, he was my elephant. Of course Simbah didn't realize this, and paid no heed to me what so ever, apart from occasionally attempting to eat my feet. I sat on Simbah's neck, while two others got to ride on the comfy chair on his back.

We were lead down river by the elephant handlers. I guess the idea was that we would ride majestically through the forests, unfortunately, Simbah was quite hungry, and every chance he got, he would head for a tree and pull branches down on top of us. I'd like to give Simbah the benefit of the doubt that he did this out of hunger, rather than spite.

We were then brought up muddy slopes, and we thought there is no way that these big elephants would be able to manage these! The paths were extremely narrow, and I was extremely nervous. But by god they managed it, which was a great relief to me, and I didn't mind too much if Simbah tried to eat my foot after that - he deserved it for getting us back safely.

That night, we celebrated our survival by getting a little drunk. One of the Thai men had the equivalent of poteen (possibly they use it to rub down elephants before racing them). I didn't try it myself, but I believe it made everyone else blind, so how bad can it be?
